First is not straight cut and has a synchro. You can select first at almost any speeds if everything in the gearbox was in good condition. I can select 1st at any speed up to redline in 1st by double-clutching and rev matching.

sounds like every decent t50 gearbox ive ever driven. most gearboxes these days wont let you go into 1st unless youre stationary or less than 20km/h. i always double clutch so it always goes in, but this is only when im about to stop do i put it in 1st.

i dont know why you need 1st gear on such a close ration gearbox like a t50 unless youre starting from stop, so dont worry about it.

yeah ur bushes etc are prob the origionals that are worn in from 25 years of being molested, as my gearbox did the same before

on the other hand does anyone elses t50 feel like 4th and 5th feel like theres almost no difference ? im starting to suspect my jdm t50 has some sort of gearset in it

well in my car at 60km/h, 4th is 2200 rpm, and 5th is 2000. so not alot but enough. i know this cause my spedo is out, so i guage it on rpm..

4th gear is 1:1, and 5th is 0.861:1 (according to mr bill sherwoods page). so not that much diffference.

i like 5th gear though, sits at a nice position in the rev range, but can still "pull" up hills a bit.

Every T50 I've ever driven on whines when you downshift into first. In fact just about every older car I've driven does it too.

As far as I'm concerned rarely is there even a reason to actually downshift at all into first. And if you're coming into a stop, just put it into neutral or keep the clutch down. Then when you're ready to take off put it into gear.

Seems to me this is just one big non-issue.
