    An open end diff is a diff which has no cover over the end. Basically because diff oil has a high viscosity it creates drag on the drivetrain as the gears move through it. You would have heard how you loose a certain percentage of your power through the drivetrain. Part of this loss is caused by the drag from the oil.
    So what you do is you run it without oil. And to keep it cool you run it with no cover so it is air cooled.
    Only thing is cos moving gears are exposed its illegal pretty much everywhere. but then if you run your car low what cop is going to get on his hands and knees to look

    it works better with a locker and people who are truly hardcore do the same thing to the gearbox, only you actually need to cut the bottom half of the casing off!
