My current tow car is a VU ss ute... would be great if it was an auto.. the gearing is all wrong for towing as a manual. The BEST tow car i've driven was a turbo diesle 4x4 rodeo... Almost No difference with a car and trailer on. drove so well..
4WD or F-truck. Towed with Fords/ Holdens but you always have that reservation coming down a mountain range. I tow with a Pajero and wouldn't go anything smaller these days.

my (tow car in the making) is a mx83.
not 100% on towing rules but... i think that the trailer cannot exeed the weight of the tow vehical? it weighs about ~1550kg
will have bigger brakes, bigger wheels/tyres so should be plenty for towing a corolla.
having the ability to lock shit up is good too, i find with an alloy tray back it can get annoying sometimes.

fuck putting wheels on a falcon, leave her stock and tow away!
btw, BT50 does a tidy job
I have a BA 4.0 styleside, it's nice enough to drive every day, has heaps of room in the back and tows well.

they are a bit light for my liking. well the 2wd version anyway.
wasn't too bad with a t-18 on trailer but with a mx83 it was kinda a bit over loaded
have a fair bit of gun, a billion psi of diesel + boost = win
