So I was just wondering... are the heads of the 4age engines from ae82, ae92 and jdm ae86 all the same? i.e. could you get the head off an ae82 fwd corolla and use it on your rwd ae86 block?
cheers

just depending on if it is a big port or small port but yea pretty much, only thing that is really different is the intake manifold, so if you get a small port head you will have to get an adapter to fit a bigport rwd intake
ok cheers.
so does the bigport and smallport literally have bigger and smaller ports respectively?
how do i tell a smallport from a bigport? apart from jdm 4age are there other cars with bigports in them?
A few cars came with bigports
Check this link out
in terms of 16V 4ages, there are basically two diffrerent types.
small port and bigport.
bigport being the early model which is found in ae86's as well as ae82's.
and there is smallport which is a higher compression engine (10ish:1) and is found in the ae92's.
ae92 one is rated at 100kw where as the ae82 one is rated at 86kw, and the ae86 one is rated at 92kw?. the only difference between ae82 and ae86 is the different tune in the ecu. not really necessary to know..but just in case you were wondering.
the heads will "fit" on the blocks, but they are different. the smallport has an extra oil drain out of the head (external) which the bigport doesnt have. i think the water outlets are different on the back of the heads too, but you should be able to mix and match them...
the intake port sizes are different (big vs small) and thus intake manifolds are different. as the bloke above me said you can get an adaptor to make a rwd intake fit on a smallport, but its often easier and cheaper to have the smallport manifold "cut n shut" (ends cut off and welded on the opposite ends)
im not sure about pistons though..the smallport ones are different. not sure if you can just straight swap heads with the pistons etc. maybe someone else knows.
btw....why do you ask? i think you should buy the big port head in my garage![]()

sorry kesev dave, not looking to buy anything yet... just doing some research, as im looking to offer a port and polishing service soon, after i have done it to my own car (which is just an m10b18 driven beema mind).
how much were you looking to sell that head for anyway?
not much. it suits reco. been sitting down stairs for a while. few burnt out valves.
