the ae86 tank pickup hole will fit the ae82 pump - not the ae71. filler neck is on a different angle, so get some new rubber hose to connect it to the filler.
Yo homiez!
I hate fuel systems. I now smell of petrol. The only plus side of this whole operation is that the AE71 has a drain plug in the fuel tank, which means no siphoning for me!
I'll cut to the chase:
Trying to set up my AE71's 4AGE fuel system. I opted for the in-tank pump setup, not the external VL lifter + sender type setup, because i couldn't be bothered to deal with the noise, and to have to mount more things in the boot / under the car etc.
I mistakenly believed that the EFI pump from an AE82 would fit into my AE71's hole... WRONG! If you're reading this and thinking this is the go, IT ISN'T! Look at images from the two. The AE82's pump mounting plate has six screws. The AE71's has five. Fail @ life by me, the AE71's hole never had to be big enough to deal with a pump!
Anyways, i've been offered an AE86 ADM tank on the cheap, so i'm thinking that it might be worth it to create my own "JDM" type setup, i.e. the ADM tank with an in-tank pump, but i was wondering how much modification to the tank itself would be required?
I've read that the filler neck needs to be altered... How? And is there anything else needed to shoehorn that homie in?
I've tried searching on the e-webz... no luck.
THANKS HEAPS! E-beers all 'round.

to be honest i dont think you are really gaining anything from puting in an ae86 tank. it will still be a non efi tank with no baffles etc. here are some possible options that i would consider if i did my fuel system again:
-custom make an intank pump bracket in the ae71 tank, and use this pump to feed a small surge tank.
-possibly have a go at making a swirl pot inside the tank, either joining some metal to where the pump is to sort of encase the pump but with some holes to let fuel in and out. not entirely sure how to get it in there though...
-apparently later model commodores have a surge tank built in inside the tank, but its very small and compact. and its not attached to the tank, its attached to the think with the pipes on it that you can remove from the tank. i had some pictures of it, and it looked like a nice setup, damned if i can find them now though. it had 2 pumps and a little surge tank all built in.

i think you might be missing the point a little here though ke70dave, it looks like victim has access to a cheap adm sprinter tank and is looking at mounting that in an ae71 (because the ae86 tank will at least allow an ae82 cradle to bolt straight in, whereas the 71 tank hole is far too small) , and needs to know what modifications need to be made to the sprinter tank to get it in? ie moddnig the filler neck? what is involved in that?
Yeah, that's what i could determine by looking at the different mounting surfaces of both of the mounts.
Ah, i see... Is that all that is required? Just a different section of rubber pipe to cater to the different angle of the filler neck?
DaveW's pretty much got it, i'm stuck with the wrong pump for the wrong tank, so i've either got to change the pump (i.e. go smaller to fit, or do the VL inspired setup) or change the tank to suit the AE82 pump.
I thought that on account of a cheap ADM sprinter tank being available to me, that would be the easiest option, although i hear you it's still not the best.
To be honest, i'm probably going to go for the simplest setup just to get it running (my build is on a tight timeframe) and always make sure it's got over a 1/4 of a tank to prevent surge, then add in a surge tank later if need be.
But i understand your points, it's still not the best solution, but i'm prepared to use it as a starting point, then work around problems as they arise i.e. possible surge. But for your considerations if you were to ever do it again:
- How on earth would you gain access to the internals of the tank to mount a pump & bracket? Wouldn't that require childs hands to fit down the hole, or splitting the seam welds joining the two halves?
nah something like this
i tried to find that this morning when i first posted, but rollaclub was down for maintenance or something. seems to be back up now though.
hmm im still not entirely sure on your exact question....
also i wasnt aware that an ae82 thing will bolt into an ae86 tank, would definitely make life easier if i had an 86 tank, which ae82 is it from? does it have to be a twin cam one? (though im not sure if they had any other efi engines in ae82's besides the 16v)

r31 rb30 pump fits like a fucking glove in a keto tank, i ran one to feed my surge tank for a while with a bm running from the surge. cost like 160 bucks for a genuine bosy, quiet, easy.

how about just cutting out the ae71 opening and welding the ae86 one to replace it . wouldn't this be easier ?

86 tank fits simply into a 70 or 71, get your 86 tank, go down your local wrecker and grab the rubber hose that the ke70 has in the filler neck... make the appropriate cut, re join with the rubber hose and done.
