ok Victim and I tried this today and we couldnt get it to ffit properly. when we got it up there and tried to get it in we couldnt get the tank to sit high enough? from what we can tell it is sitting hard up against the lines on the top of the cradle and under the wheel well and we're still about an inch away from getting the straps done up completely? this is with the filler neck not even attached by the way. when we had the filler neck attached we were still about two inches from getting the strap done up. Now i figured this meant i had to trim the rubber piece from the ae71 that is joining the 71 filler neck to the tank... is this the case?

HAS ANYONE ENCOUNTERED THIS ISSUE BEFORE?

if so what was the problem/how did you resolve it? Any help is much appreciated!
anyone who wants to come and lend a hand will be even more appreciated!!

If you look at the rubber, you might notice that it's stretched over the metal parts and/or the rubber not over metal has shrunk. If you trim the rubber you'll find it difficult to push it over the metal filler neck. Cut it to about the length of the cut one in the picture I posted.

You probably haven't got the tank seated(?) properly. I didn't have it up properly the first time I did it but subsequent times, it has gone up first go.

hmm yea i did notice that thats why i have not yet cut it... in that picture you have above that is a ke70 tank did you say? should i be keeping the internal tongue in the ae86 tank? the way i have done it is to cut the ae86 filler neck off quite low, as low as the pic above, but leaving the internal tongue sticking out so that it will slide up inside the ae71 filler neck, which ive let intact and bolted to the car, and the rubber piece attached to it. then we lifted the tank, slid the tongue inside the still-mounted ae71 filler neck right up to the little lip/edge on the ae86 stub (on the tank)...
    does that make sense?

    yeah.

Your idea is much better than mine in that you've kept a passage for the air to theoretically escape from. I just cut it and made it fit. No thought involved. I never encountered a problem when filling up.

I don't remember but does the tongue extend into the rubber bolt on neck part on the AE86?

(if i had photos id share but i didnt take any, dont know if alex did either but if he did he's welcome to post them up here??) the tongue extended internally in the ae86 filler neck all the way up to the bend in the pipe near the cap. i drilled out the spot welds, cut the pipe off way down the bottom, leaving enough for a hose clamp and not much more, so it left the internal tongue sticking right out. i then straightened it out so it wasnt bent cos the ae71 pipe isnt, then bolted it back onto the tank. then i lifted the tank up, slid the tongue into the untouched ae71 filler neck still bolted to the car with its rubber joiner, got it in as far as i could, tightened the hose clamps up, went to put the straps on and found that i'm at least two inches short. if i feel on top of the tank i can feel the fuel return line, the highest sitting on top of the tank, is touching the underside of the boot, so i cant go any higher, and under the wheel well, the tank is touching already at the back end of the car, but on the diff side i have abou a 30mm gap.....

i can't for the life of me figure out where i've gone wrong if it's apparently an easy bolt in fit. i even removed the filler neck and tried it again in case that was holding me back. i got closer, but still not close enough to get the straps done up completely.

I had a JDM AE86 Tank in my AE71. I did not fit it so I can't tell you the details, all I know is it fits mint, everything lines up, EXCEPT the filler neck. That needs to be made to fit for the set up to work.

Otherwise its perfect, quiet, and it never surged on me. I did always keep it over a 1/4 of a tank though.

haha this only infuriates me more because it means there's something not right with what we're trying. has anyone had the problem i'm having?

Just play around with it, shove around til it slides up.

AE86 EFI tanks are cool. Under normal commuting driving they don't surge at all. Even well into the fuel light. (probably only 5 litres left in tank, maybe less)
