might be a worn crown wheel and pinion, mine is doing the same thing as you describe during shifts and low speeds.
IMO, it should still hold out for a drift day but get it changed sooner rather then later
hey guys.
Car - ae86
motor - jap 4age with kouki 2way diff
use - daily/drift
problem - diff makes wierd noise and im sure it didnt make it before
occurs/started when - problem start after i was driving and heard a wierd noise. it turned out to be a loose wheel nut. after taht incident i started to get weird noises from diff. at low speeds turning left clunks, high speeds abit. when changing gears clunks abit.
personal situation - i took the passenger axle where the noise was coming from. axle comes off easy, bearing is still in one piece. its got new oil and jsut changed to castrol oil to see if noise goes away but still there. besides that the axle does have abit of freeplay. is that normal?
NEED to get fixed before SATURDAY because its last driftland at oran park
thanks for reading

did yours happen out of no where too? quite strange cause mine did.
mine started making the sound after doing some skids
*edit: which im assuming happened due to revving and dumping of the clutch which would have engaged the pinion really harshly into the crown wheel

im iffy about driving but, but when skidding i dont think about it
Run my locked S series for the day!! =]

Free play in what direction?
well, theres movement sometime when shiftting 1-2. and when turning left forward or backwards
I wouldn't usually expect free play in the axle shaft, once bolted in it should spin easily but also smoothly and without play. However, it is common to experience play between your crown and pinion wheel, but I wouldn't expect you to hear that during normal driving.
will take center out tomrrow to inspect.
