it is fairly easy to set the static timing. You can then drive it to a workshop/friend to set the timing.
first move the crank (19mm) clockwise until the car is at #1 tdc. You can pull the #1 plug out and check with a screwdriver or similar to be certain.
On your distributor line up the rotor to be pointing towards your number 1 lead on the distributor cap. The tooth on your distributor shaft should be inline with the sensor on the distributor body. You may have to remove and refit the distributor a couple of times to slide it onto the right tooth.
You should have even adjustment space where the bolt goes through to secure the distributor. tighten the bolt.
move the crank to the desired timing mark. bigport is 10 btdc? (double check that). loosen the distributor bolt and move the body so the pickup points line up again, tighten the bolt.
done you have set the static timing to the rightish spot.
If i havent been clear let me know and i will elaborate.
cheers
Daniel.
