i always thought it to be a cover for the rubber mount, stop grease and oil deteriorating it?
behold a 4A engine mount:
nothing new here but I want to know what does the metal cup thingy do on the right? I know where it goes but I dont see the purpose.
I have made my first test engine mounts to go from a 4age to a ke30 to ke70 and I have allowed for this thing to be in there, have I wasted my time?

rubber cuts under pressure, that would be to stop rubber cutting through its movements.

its also a quick brace for when the rubber breaks to sort of keep it together

Another funny observation. The propper 4A-GE plate is a bit different to the 4A-C one.
shield it from heat maybe?
How would it do that?
Jonny any idea how they are different?

I don't think Toyota wouldn't go to the extra cost of putting in a spacer there, I reckon they would make the mounts longer if that was the case. ( I could be wrong though)
I think it is to protect the mounts from oil and dirt etc (rubber doesn't like mineral oil which comes out of the engine pretty regularly)...
Sam if you have allowed it to stay on there I dont think there will be a problem, if it helps your mounts last a bit longer then that is a good thing.
Jonny, that's interesting, how are the two plates different?
