pull the plugs out and see what they look like. if they are fouled and black you know its burning oil. if they are wet is it oil or water? if they are dirty but one is clean then you have coolant in the cylinder. also a compression test at this time would be handy

take action after you see what the plugs say

Put a catch can on it first, cheap, easy, I had a similar problem and the catch can fixed it!
    I got nothing.

    Payed

and Payed - fuel wont cause clouds of white smoke - sounds like oil getting into the intake and being sucked back into the engine and being burnt - its running rough because the oil is fowling your plugs. Thats why its so inconsistant.

    DO the following.

    1. Get a catch can
    2. Set the timing correctly or atleast check it if you suspect its out before you give it a thrash again.
    3. comp test the engine so you know where the engine is at with its life - im pretty sure they should be a 15% tollerance. any more and that cylinder is on its way out.

Think about this seriously, were you cornering hard left hand just before this happened or during when this happened?
    I got nothing.

well yeah i was doing a tear drop over and over..

thanks for all your help guys.
Ive got a catch can now and it seems to have fixed the problem.
I took my intake pipe off and oil was all though it so it does appear i had oil getting up and running though the intake.

It still is kinda strange that all the smoke i made didnt rly smell oily. But anyways.

I hope this helps anyone in the future that might have the same problem.

I Just wanna Bump this up because my engine is also smokey, but pulls quite hard.
I just settled on the idea that the oil rings are gone, but the compression rings are still fairly OK...

After reading this, my brain almost broke. How does installing a catch can (i'm presuming just off the breather in the top of the cam cover?) stop the smoke?

Isn't the can just catching any oil that would of normally just blown out the top and into the engine BAY? not oil that will go back through the motor ehhhhhh?

    or am i trippen'

The normal path from the rocker cover breather is back into the intake manifold

the catch can stops the smoke because it allows oil to be "caught" in an external chamber, instead of being re circulated into the intake manifold and subsequently being drawn back into the engine and being burnt - oil burning creates blue smoke, and gums up plugs which inhibits the spark so you get rough running and misfiring etc.

Though obviously its not going to be buring oil consistantly like it would if your oil rings are gone. but in the end the oil makes it way into the combustion chamber in both cases.
