how do you do it with a grinder without killing yourself?
by not using a 9''
you take them out of the strut first
i had a mate tell me how he did in back in NZ....
you leave the springs in the front, and angle the angle grinder in such a way that when you cut through it both halves of the spring tend to spring away from the cutting disc
its hard to explain, but once youve done one the "wrong way" you will understand.
he also gave me such tips on how to shoot a top-hat at a wall with the force of the spring, by undoing the top nut in the top hat and getting your hand out of the way really quick.
yer do what sam-Q suggests.

1. Undo shock top while strut is in car. Use a rattle gun or a lot of muscle.
2. Proceed to undo strut bolts from steering arm and strut top.
3. Push down on control arm and yank bottom of strut out.
4. The strut will fall off the steering arm and the spring will be loose. You do not need to use spring clamps or worry about getting shot in the head coz you undid the shock top. So when the strut comes out, the spring is loose and can't hit you in the face.
5. Rotate the strut so the brake lines aren't being stretched and pull the spring out of the strut and then proceed to cut on a bench vice or something.
I use this every time. When you put springs back in you dont need to clamp or worry coz they won't be fully captive or 'loaded'.
Hope that helps.
Cut them while the spring is still sitting captive in the strut. Good times ahead.
NOT. This is how I did my first lowering job. Not real smart.
Do what svenmate said. Or purchase some spring compressors and whack them on the spring once the strut has been fully removed. Remove shock nut, slide the spring out and start cutting.
