Proposed complex in Lucas Heights
[QUOTE=ae86ln;246396][QUOTE=Beau;239264]Got this email from my Aunty a couple days ago regarding the new track thats been approved for Wyong (North of Sydney) to replace Oran Park.
I may not have the latest info, but have been on the council mailing list for this proposal. The idea was canned some time ago from the last correspondence that I have seen (some months ago).
Last word was the council was approaching other regional councils (e.g. cessnock) to build a complex further out, after all local options were considered unsuitable. The problem that I saw, was that they wanted a complex way bigger than what was really necessary. Venues were considered on the basis that the complex would run V8 supercars, have a seperate drag strip, etc, etc. Wtf do we need two drag strips 1hr drive apart from eachother? To show that the council was perhaps a little misguided, the concept of a V8 supercar race held on a street circuit in Wyong industrial park was considered when the land options were exhausted......street race, say what - wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the exercise?
For driver training, small club events, etc, we could make do with a big "carpark" i.e. skidpan. This would go a long way to getting some hooning off the streets. Costs would be exponentially smaller & there would be fewer noise concerns (noise limit or restricted to registered cars only) - which was part of the problem encountered with the original proposal. I'm not blaming the council, good on them for trying. They acted on the responses to the questionnare they put out to the public, which apparently had a significant number of responses, plus some key profile figures getting behind the concept. Maybe we (collectively - the public) asked for too much....and as a result will get nothing.
As far as I've heard, there has been no follow up work to see what scale venue could possibly be built on the proposed land sites. Which I find disappointing, because it makes me consider this exercise was about publicity & tourism for Wyong holding major racing events, rather than actively doing something positive for the community on a smaller scale.
I must stress though - I was/am not directly involved in this project & am just a member of the public with my ear to the ground.
