Halfway through mine, and I've learned more by building my own cars/engines and studying textbooks and online resources such as this site then I have learned through TAFE and on the job training.
I mostly did it for the knowledge, and you don't even need that to be a qualified mechanic (if you've ever spent time in a dealership I'm sure you know this). I'm in-between host employers at the moment and if I don't have a job within the next month I will quit and go into full time study. A trade cert. in automotive isn't worth much, you need a degree to go places.
(This isn't just my opinion, it is also the opinion of almost every tradie I have ever worked with).

point being, melburn has shit wages and there is still demand in mackay for mechanics and other trades, think it over... better lifestyle (re: no newyork wannabes) AND they earn a lot more for all jobs.
i bet you would earn ATLEAST 30% better wage just by doing ur job in mackay

its a pity the guys who maintain and repair 2 tonne projectiles travelling in close proximity to other 2 tonne projectiles near pedestrians arent looked after better.
its also a pity that people are sooo focused on money as the end result.
