i was doing my time as a 3rd yr heavy mech and i tell you what ever since i left that i have made more money then any of the boys i worked with and they are 2 yrs out now ...... i still work on trucks monday to friday but i get rdo and weekend to (gotta love that ) not only that i am on 27hr as a trade assit fuckin good cash 1000 a week

$600 a week would barely pay me bills... My last fly away job I was invocing over $6000 a week..
Not that I get good work like that often though... Friends of mine were on a job last year. $130p/h $800p/w lafha plus a few other perks.. and they spent 6 hours of their shift for the first few weeks playing cards.. while still getting paid.!!!

Mechanics is a great skill to have, but a horrid job to have to do day in day out...
I wont to change trades.. a freind not long ago changed from a chippy to a sparky and he's 30 somehing...

I'm a qualified mechanic, at mazda and getting put through every mazda course that comes up (think of it like uni for mechanics) and I am still only on $21 an hour, it is absolute rubbish, and I would like to get out, BUT, I have bills to pay so can't exactly quit and go and study fulll time

Dusty.. I'm a boilermaker... Welder 1st class... most of the good money jobs are on the water infastructure projects... dams, pipe lines, dessal plants. ect.
I have just turned fully qualified and am on 19 per hour, with a payrise to 22 in a month or so, i wouldnt except anything less then 22 per hour as a tech, fucking shit money being a mechanic, if I had my time over i would have done something else.
Yea 600 is not great, but everywhere is different, I know of a guy at BMW who is on 25 plus bonus so maybe just look around elsewhere if you dont get a payrise in a month or so.
In general you should always be looking around for another job with better title/conditions/pay. Then when you get offered one you let your current employer no your offer and if they cant beat it, leave.... and repeat
