Thread: Do You Have an FT86? Because I do.

Hey Meadan, I know about strengthening a structure like that, but I have a hammer, a grinder and a welder, so its a bit hard to do that stuff. So bracing it all up will have to do. I know it will make it a little heavier than it needs to be, but I have to work with what I have, so it will do.

Thanks for the input though dude.

You don't always have to put folds or ribbing on areas like rails as it is unreasonable considering the shape of material to begin with. That is why they use larger beams where the cross sectional area is larger. They only use folds and ribbing on thinner material to keep weight down.

When you say the welds should "only hold it together instead of taking all the stress'' isn't right, because you have just created a joining point. This then becomes a section where the force will be transferred through along the beam/material you have just welded in. The material will either be in compression or tension and the joints then have to hold that section together and not fail from the stresses that the car is then put through that joint(weld). The metal also needs to have enough strength and be tough enough to withstand these forces and not fail.
    Simple materials engineering.

What you have done will hold.

Good to know haha. What I am attempting to do, is split the rail in 2 sections (inner and outer) I'm going to modify the the cross member, so it bolts in with 4 bolts either side. The outer (wheel well side) will have cross bracing like my old rails, but done properly haha. But on the engine bay side I will use the same sort of bracing horizontly, as thats the short/thin side of the rail. I think that should be solid enough to keep it all together.

No more right angles, or shitty gasless welds, just have to be more carefull dressing things up, which is why I'm welding from the inside, so hopefully this time it will all come together.

I never commented on anything he has done so far, I also think the fabrication so far will hold up fine.

I was just pointing out that more weld does not always mean more strength, and gunner seems to have it all sorted.

You have reminded me why I dont post in build threads anymore though, Ill just stick to my day job

Yea sorry bout that, you are correct that more weld doesn't mean more strength. Just re-read what you posted and I think I only read part of it and answered that. (Went a lil OTT in the explanation)

You could run a bead of weld along the plate as a rib but by the looks of things he doesn't want any welds showing so that won't work

if my welds were all sexy and tidy, i'd leave them, but they aren't haha. Hey Donga, can you foresee any issue with the way I plan to brace this rail up?

I kinda know what you mean but still not sure on having two sections? Are you boxing the rails up still?

I would say you need to atleast have the same thickness in the rails you are making compared to what was there as well as the same cross sectional area. If you can add gussets in for support it would be recommended. Otherwise should be good.
