    Default Diff centre slop

    Hey guys,

i am putting the centre back in my 71, its just the stock diff, and have put new bearings on but kept the same shims (put back in the right sides).

how much (if any) movement side to side should there be BEFORE the axles have been put back in?
I seem to have a little slop and not sure if its right haha, and will it take once the axles are in and tightened.

*bearings were bought at a bearing shop if that changes anything.

    cheers will

I'm afraid there's a bit more to diff setup than just bolting it back together.

You need to check backlash and contact patch bewteen the pinion and the crownwheel. Then adjust then re-check, etc. Or take it to a shop...

or just slap it all back together, ignore the problem and drive it until it gives up. I've had plenty of diffs with backlash and whine that lasted a surprising length of time.

true as always hen has the answers. Pay someone to do it or put it together yourself and deal with it.

Ive has a few misses with my diffs but mostly ive got it down pat now. It helps to have the right tools too.

After further investigations the cause has been found, the outter bearing case on the new bearing is not as deep as the original. The taper seems identical still so ill use the original outer with the new inner.

I want to get it as tight as possible, but also realise that DIY has its downsides haha.

    Thanks guys
