S13/ae71 wags hybrid!!!

Hey all... A good friend and I are in a position where we have the opportunity to pick up a near complete 92' 180SX with SR20DET for $3500 and we already have an AE71 wagon so basically here it is...

We wanna look at the possibility of taking the entire rear subframe, the entire front suspension and steering system as well as the engine and the gearbox and transplanting all of it into the wagon in the hope of making a reliable track weapon...

The reason we have decided to look at this so seriously is because we have a very cheap and mechanically sound 180sx coming into our possesion at a very cheap price... Now if you think about it the S13 is a bigger car therefore must have larger components to cope with the strain of being bigger... S13 parts; performance or OEM are as cheap as chips and readily available... Not to mention the added bonuses of having rack & pinion and power steering, a cheap IRS rear end (lets dial in some camber, also cheap LSD's) plus more power potential from the engine and gearbox...

Im pretty confident in my fabrication and welding skills and my mate is a gun painter and gets into the electrical side of things so we will be undertaking 99% of the work ourselves...

Now i know ppl have done the SR20 and S13 coilover conversions but i'll be buggered with all the hours i've spent looking around if i can find any more information regarding irs conversions or the steering conversion...

Can someone please point in the direction of some info or share they're own views on the topic...

I remember seeing a picture on this website of a ae86 in america that has done everything that you want to do.

sounds like a lot of work in the rear end,whats the gain?better handling?whats the car going to be used for when you say track,grip or drift. there was a red ke70 i think d1 car for sale not long ago with the rear end you want,it had some good pictures,

Konakid - i dont want an s13 though. I want the light weight of the corolla and the reliability of the silvia mixed to form some kind of miniature japanese attack missile...

Dog - do you know where i can find said pictures dog? I found this here about Early celica IRS conversions on toymods this filled me and should fill you in on why its such a good idea...

- Relatively easy and well documented 5-stud conversion

- Coilover rear shocks
- Huge aftermarket support in adjustable coilovers, brake packages and camber/castor/toe adjustment kits, driven by all the cashed up dorifto boys and girls.

i see your point but building s13/ae71 would just be pointless

- Relatively easy and well documented 5-stud conversion - why would you need 5 stud? are you going to put gangster 17/18 inch wheels on it?
- Disc brakes with large upgrade potential - just get a disc brake rear end from a ae86, put bigger discs on it...
- Coilover rear shocks - again, you can get this on a live axle.....
- Huge aftermarket support in adjustable coilovers, brake packages and camber/castor/toe adjustment kits, driven by all the cashed up dorifto boys and girls. - the support isnt fairly large as nissan have but there are alot of parts for ae86's, you just have to look...

it must be said "if you have to ask".....

i woudlnt bother trying to fit all the s13 gear into the corolla.

just cut the s13 at the sills, leaving only the driveline, chassis and the floor plan.

do the same to the corolla.

place corolla on top of s13 chassis/driveline/floor plan.

then weld. alot. i would be doing a full cage while you dont have the two peices together.

then you have an entire s13 which will drift good and be somewhat reliable. with it looking like an old boxy corolla (why you would want this i dunno, but its up to you)

i saw one where they used an old morris i think, most of these buiilds have been overseas. and most of them use a cool old car such as a morris. that would otherwise be useless at motorsport.

great idea, i say do it, but i wouldnt expect much help from this forum. if you have the time, space and the ability to weld PROPERLY, no reason why you shouldnt do it.
