ok so i went for a drive for about half an hour or so it reached temp about 80 deg which im happy with but now if i still give it a boot full the temp gauge drops 10 deg then slowly makes its way back to 80 deg ???? this is very confusing still dose this mean my thermostat is getting sucked open???
i also still have that welch plug in the top radiator hose to slow the flow down and a larger water pump pully.
any one else got any more ideas i can try???
hmmm a little left field, but how much do you trust your temp guage?
my VDO temp guage has been playing up recenetly. temp creeps up for no reason, give it a hit with my hand and it jumps back to where its supposed to be.

I trust it fine I have a thermo gun too I check it with that and it says the same temp give or take a couple of degrees
So any more ideas cause I'm confused about it
what temp is your thermostat ment to open? have you tried putting it in a cup of hot water with a thermometer and seeing if its opening early, it might be as simple as replacing your thermostat,

I'll have to buy a thermometer and check it out that I will try next but I'd say it is fine. Drop the coolant for the hundredth time lol. I will get it right soon enough.
Just put water in it until you can figure it out. Wont be ideal, but for the testing period it shoudlnt do any harm (im assumign a shorter testing period).
I had a similar problem with my car(JDM bigport) and it never warmed up, I found out that the thermostat was stuck and not opening fully. This is due to the car sitting around for ages (over a year). I changed the thermostat to a genuine Toyota bypass one , the one on the right from Sam's photo.
After fixing it and actually driving the car I noticed that it never fully warmed up and always ran cold, so I took off the manual radiator fan and now I drive with nothing there and it stays about 1/3 of the way on the temp gauge.
thanks for the help ke70 but i run thermo fans and they dont come on till 92 deg so yeah
