Default Installing Kelford cams and have some questions.

    Hi folks,

    Happy new year!

I am wanting to install some kelford cams, 194-B's into my blacktop 20v. I have a stand a lone so that part is covered.

However, do I need to removed the head to take the valve spring retainers out? Would this tool work on a 20v?

Any insight on the matter would be great. I'm wondering if I will have to order a new head gasket if the head comes off.

    Thanks!
    Grant

Yes you can do it without removing the head, in exactly the same way as they're doing in that link

And that TYPE of tool will work, but that EXACT one (the bluepoint one) is just a bit too big for a 20V head (i know, cause i have one). There are a few tools similar that are a bit narrower and should suit fine.

why do you want to take out the valve spring retainers when your installing new cams? I wouldn't bother changing em... to much hassle.
i dont know anything about the kelford 194-b cams... do they require you to upgrade your springs, too?

if you must change the springs, or you want to replace your seals for whatever reason,
i'd recommend taking the head off the engine and doing it on a bench...
so much easier than leaning into a engine bay for the entire job.

What about removing the buckets? Any special tools needed for those? I need to adjust valve clearance when I set the cams in. The B's have 8.7 mm of valve lift, I am told the stock springs are OK. I don't plan on revving past 8500.

Tell me if I'm missing something please.

The buckets? If you have the cams out use a magnet. It's quicker that way too.

Bolt your new cam in, check clearances.
    Remove cam, change shims.
Reassemble/dial in (if required/you have adj cam gears).
    Done.

from memory 8.7 is too much lift for standard valve springs, i am pretty sure that's what i had in my car and that was getting coil bind with the standard springs.

Should replace them anyways they are flogged out springs that would have probs like 100,000kms on them. Don't want valve float either.

just remember that if you do decide to change springs, with the head on, to make sure you have compressed air in the cylinder first

My engine seems to be in pretty good nick, do I really need new lifters? I selected these cams because they were supposed to be drop ins.
