Default 4AGE fuel and block questions

Ok, for starters, my fuel is surging when i give it some kick. We examined, that the previous owner has run two external VN type pumps, back to back, one must not be working and slowing down the proccess (from our random crack).

So i bought a Bosch 910 (was going to go 044) but found this (Thanks to Craig!). Anyways, they must have run a surgy in it before im assuming, and then took it out and continued to use the two pumps.

Now the engine is 'apparently' a 4age, 16v, bigport. From the examinating, i have come to a conclusion that it has a 4AC bottom end, with a 4AGE head, this is discovered by the Oil filter, 4ag didnt fit, 4ac, perfect.

The fuel guage also has issues, will only show full tank when i've filled her up, then after a short time of driving, it'll drop to like half, then 0, then go back up to half next time i drive it, and same progress. Could this be due to a Carby tank + Sender, and efi engine?

What's the easiest ways of examining, or experimenting?

With regards to the fuel gauge, it is a common issue, efi has nothing to do with it, just means the pick up in the sender to the gauge are worn or dirty, my car does the exact same thing.

As far as the surging, I would look at fuel pressure, check to make sure the fuel reg is working, and check your injectors, if they are dirty or blocked it will do exactly what you are describing, two pumps is over kill and one will not slow the other, unless they are running in line back to back and one is blocked.

The other thing worth checking is that you are getting a consistent fuel supply, ie it is not getting blocked at the pick up end by anything.

    Good Luck

early 4age and any 4ac blocks are near on identical. Describe what stopped it fitting?

    Sam, thanks for moving mate.
Come to think of it, the threads could have been the same, but if they were we would of made it fit. I'm pretty sure the initial filter didn't clear something in that area, but if the thread had been the correct one we would had made it fit.
The one that was already on there was the same as the 4AC filter i purchased.

Only real way to confirm 4A-C bottom end is to get a camera down the spark plug hole to check the top of the pistons or pull the clutch to check flywheel bolts. Oil filter ain't gonna tell you nuttin'.
