New member. first AE-86, engine advice please.

hello all. so i am new to this forum but no where near new to forums. i am an active member at sevenstring.org and on toyota nation. the first new car i ever bought was a 2010 corolla, my wife made me a deal that if i changed all the babies diapers (i have a 8mo old girl and the wife is prego with a boy hopefully) for a year then i could get a FT-86. Then toyota said the american version would most likely be a scion FT-s, and the specs were less than impressive. so i decided to try and find something else. this little guy popped up on CL here in beaverton OR. so i got him.












now the guy i got it from says he wanted to do an LS1 motor. but with the 49# clutch and 150# tranny that takes away the awesome weight distribution. he was also thinking of doing a 1uz yota 8cyl.

my friend who is going to be building this with me wants to do a 13b rotary.

im wanting to stay with toyota power. and i want it to be a 4cyl. after alot of reading on forums and wiki and such, i decided that i want to do either a 3sgte or 4age.

my question is did they ever make a RWD 3sgte? i believe the 86-89 gt4 alltrac celicas had em,but i dont know for sure. also the beams 3sgte wasnt RWD was it? i have heard of people using this engine but how do they get a FWD to work in a RWD car?

i guess im wanting to know what would be a more reliable and usefull engine. the 3sgte or 4agze.

i want the car to have around 350hp and 200FP tourqe. im planning on doing fiberglass front end and doors so 350 at 6500 rpm should fly like a bat outta hell. im planning on building the rear end in to a stronger LDS rear end. any way i guess i just wanted to say hi and get your opinions on what motor i should go with. thanks,

you are from the US yeah? if so thought about a F20c conversion

i have thought about that conversion but i wanna keep it toyota. that is an amazing enginge but i would have bought a honda if i was going to use that engine.

due to the balancing of the 3sgte motor i think im going to go with the 3sge beams out of a ls200 or 300 instead. it should cost me around 2000. then id be in this about 3000 to have it running. thats the motor im going to use. any one on here done that swap before?

There is a 3s rwd from factory. Not sure wat car they come out of. Over here it's in a Cressida or something like that. Not sure wat it would be in ur world where u drive on the wrong side of the road and car hahaha

Haveaparty: Can you not say anything if you don't know what you're talking about? The RWD 3s is a black top beams out of a lexus IS200 or Toyota Altezza RS200, not a cressida which only had R or M engines here. and we never got them here off the showroom except for the VERY few that were special order from Toyota by individual customers. America never got IS200 in either 1G or 3S either because they want big cube engines and only got IS300.

To aslsmm: I think the american end up using F20/F22 is because available at the local junkyard, not imported from Japan. One thing that simplifies the conversion a tiny bit is the exhaust manifold being on your(LHD) passenger's side meaning the exhaust manifold can take a clear path down to the underside of the car without encountering the steering shaft. not a big deal but it's one less thing you have to worry about. and the F20C has a damn strong gearbox on it unlike the 6MT on the IS200, which is fine for leaving it NA but if you ever want to turbo it, that's one thing you don't have to worry about.

Oh and if you go googling beams 3S-GE, there are 3 versions, a FWD(red-top), a RWD(black top) and a AWD which is transverse(grey-top).

The 3S-GTE from the all-trac is transverse and things are backwards. This means you gotta make new inlet and exhaust manifolds, which adds to the complexity, time and cost of the project. You also gotta figure out what gearbox to use. There are sorta bolt on options but you have to piece the components together from here and there. It can be done though.

only beams 3sge's cam rwd from factory, normal 3sge's came in fwd only.

if you have a look around the forum, you will see that beams in ae86 is quite popular but expensive

Funny that in the US you guys only ever got the Trueno style 86's - a rarity in Aus.. and we only got the Levin...we all want what we can't have haha

is there reasoning behind the 2 piece front and rear bars that they fitted from factory in the US? wonder why they didn't just use 1 piece ones...?

Different bumper reinforcement piece which are more like KE70 than zenki and kouki, and actually do something when you back your car into the wall at an oval track.

Go the 1UZ with an R series box and an F series diff, job done and its all toyota...or lexus
