Sound deadening removal

For the removal of sound deadening to save weight or whatever your reason be, there are 2 good methods you can use...

1. Hammer and chisel.
Get some tunes and a mate and maybe a beer and start hammering and chiseling... You WILL need to repaint the metal afterwards as you would have no doubt scratched some of the paint on the metal underneath the sound deadening from the chisel.

2. Dry ice.
Grab some dry ice, dump it on the deadening and throw a towel over it.. leave for about 2 mins and then move onto a new section, hit the "iced" section wit a hammer and it will shatter, adn sound deadening will shatter away.

This mod is mainly for race cars that are trying to save all the weight they can, the removal of carpet/sound deadening etc DOES make your car quite a bit noisier, but you'd be surprised how much the final amount of sound deadening you throw away weighs.... I know I was.

another 1 that works is a heat gun and scrapper. use turps to remove any left over glue. also a coat of paint would be good for a little bit of rust protection.

yerp this is exactly what im doing atm
got some chassis paint to put down so the paint wont scratch up

Also note. Only consider doing this if you are serious about weight reduction. I wouldnt recomend this to anyone drives their car daily or likes listening to music while driving. Cause once its gone you'll be hearing every vibration, every stone flicking up through the guards, every groan of the chassis twisting.

i did about 75% of the drivers side footwell area tonight (where the pedals are) and i thought i would weigh it to see how much i got out. and to my suprise it was 2kg this stuff does weigh a bit

definately makes listening to music a no goer, but adds to the race car feel, also not that with a 4age installed, the passenger footwell floor gets VERY hot for people with no shoes on.......

Yeah its a brutal thing to do, but so far I love it...

dont get me wrong, it was early on in the build of the yellow car i did it, even right up the firewall and all.....

yeah im doing the same thing, but im only doing the foot wells, as all the tar has melted and lumpy. the heat gun method is the best, iv found if you hold the heat gun over it to long its goes runny, but if you move the eat gun around the area it just peels off.

yeah ive found that the sound deading in the boot is no where near as heavy or thick as the stuff in the foot wells etc
