yeah can fit

could also use standard fwd sandwich plate and make up some lines once you have mounted your core
gday
I have just started a full rebuild of a black/blue 4age, this engine will be used to power my drift/thrash car, (not for long, just till i can afford a 4agze half cut).
I am going to fit an oil cooler to it, and was just wondering where to start.
I read the article in hpi about beau yates car, and it said that it used a ca18det cooler and that it bolted straight onto the engine. any truth behind this.
thanks brad

The truth? Yes they fit no worries, the biggest problem with oil coolers is that if you buy a cheap dodgy one, they can reduce oil pressure a little too much. Ive got a HKS remote filter kit and had to get rid of my core because it would not work with my VVT-i.
My personal suggestion is to buy one from Just Jap with the steel braided lines, they're quite expensive (around $800) but theres almost no pressure drop and you can't melt the oil lines (which i've done now... twice)
if you want to do it cheap, I was going to get a cheap sandwich plate for like 80 bucks, you may find cheaper (with thermostat at least), then go to wrecker get an automatic transmition cooler off some family car(like magna).
so it actually stoped your vvt-i, silver or black top? cos i have a silver top and am currently finding out what the best cooler would be for me, alot of other people say that there is no interferance at all,
I had a no name core (read: automatic trans cooler from a EA falcon) so yeah- with the black tops, oil pressure dips quite heavily when VVT-i comes on, no so on the silvertops, dont know why.
As far as I know, its only the blacktops which are sensitive to oil pressure, though I still wouldn't
Lastly watch that the oil temp doesn't dip too low
how is low oil temp a prob, i thought heat was our enemy
You need the engine to be at "optimum operating temp". If it is too cold, then oil doesnt flow properly, clearances are different etc. Thats why you should always wait for your engine to warm up before you give it a thrash.
Back onto the CA18 cooler story, Does the CA adapter plate have the same thread as the 4AGE block? I occasionally see CA cooler kits selling 2nd hand for cheap, but unless i knnow it will fit, theres no point buying one.
Yeah Craig, the one that I gots (and Josh Young) has are ex- CA18
... so you're saying an oil cooler kit from a CA will fit onto a 4AGE/ZE????
is there anything else thats needed? coz i really want to put one on mine for track days n stuff
dave
