Fun, So many topics here that have been brought up that I had a comment on but i have a 0.5 second memory.
Compensating for lower power cars such as the hachi in judging?....
Hmmmmmmmmmmm
From the D1 runs I have seen, hachis dont always win heats, but when they do they win it through and through, with no need for compensation judging neede dor given.
Just as spectacular, just as quick, just as much or even more angle than its rival which is usually an s15.... etc etc
And on race drifting.
There is such a thing... with it being the fastest or just as fast action through the section of track.
Not just because someone gets so far in front they can play aorund a lil, or on a downhill with momentum to carry you through.
Show drift (which is what is judged in drift comps).... yes
and Touge drift = race drift.. not quite, touge drifting is just for fun, not for time or wins... and alot of the angles and stuf fthey get are impractical.
How To Make You Car Handle, by Fred Puhn.
"Pro methods for improved handling, safety and performance. How to check chassis suspension and alignment; set up for highway, road course, drags or oval track. Skid-pad testing, chassis tuning. Anti-roll bars, weight jackers. Body mods for reduced drag, increased traction, wings and spoilers. Practicla data, formulas and instructions."
Sure some of you have heard of this bookie.
Index..... has a page on drift....
Page 12. Doesnt say all that much though.
After talking about large slip angle of tyre and using it to slow down (scrubbing off speed).....
"Because of relatively large slip angles many racing cars aooear to be sliding-side ways through the turns. This attitude in a turn is often called a drift, and is looked on by many as the ultimate cornering technique. A car nearing th elimit of adhesion will naturally assume this drift if the read tire operate at larger slip angles."
....and on with more technical stuff and physics which confuse me (pretty much a large chunk of the book lol), good for an someone with a lil physics of engineering understanding.
The picture accompanied with it has this caption "Jackie Stewart in car #8 demonsrates the classic drift through a turn. All four tires are at an angle to the direction the car is travelling, and the front tyres are pointing straight ahead."
(pic looks like a 1970s F1 car - not good with vintages in race cars)
So for all those "prestigeous" auto-enthusiast groups who organise hill-climbs and say drifting of anysort has absolutely no place on a track. Stick that up yas lol.... Jackie Stewart was a legend!
