none of those cars are unpopular... they all have their groups and always will
Ive been thinking how everyones just drifting and even just driving all the same cars right now (silvia, skyline, sprinter) but theres so many other cars around that would be cool. SOme of my ideas for cool cars are:
Starions - Apparently these cars stock suspension was really good and they handled pretty well, I dont know about the engine tho...
Old Z's (240, 260, 280, 1st 300s) I love the looks of the old Zs and Ive seen a couple of reasonably priced 260Zs for sale recently. With an RB20 these cars would go hard.
929 turbo - Just a cheep turbo car, probly with a bit of aftermarket.
Old BMWs and porsches. These cars are da bling (or would be if someone did one up) and with a CA18 (or MR2 4AGZE for the porsche, I know its probably impractical) or something repairs wouldnt even cost that much.
MX5 - Apart from their feminine looks I have no idea why these arent more popular.
Early Supras - They look cool and the turbos have some power.
VN Commodores for drift - Theyre the same as R31 skylines (unless im getting my commodore letters mixed up) and some came with turbos. Why are people not drifting these?
Suzuki Mighty Boys - My local mechanic put a Swift engine in his and says it was a fairly straightfoward swap and it goes hard too, imagine a turbo swift GTi motor in one of these... Theyd weigh like 500kgs and I reckon they look cool too.
AW11 MR2s - Apart from the 2 seats and apparent un-driftability of these they are ausome little cars.
Just wondering if anyone else feels like people arent trying anything "new" and what the reasons these cars arent more popular with young modders is. I mean noone would even know what an AE71 was if we didnt have sprinters out there... Im sure there must be some good reasons why some of these cars arent popular but apart from some lack of aftermarket for some I cant see any problems.

But I mean you see just as many ladies driving these cars as enthusiats and you barley ever see any of them at the track.
What I mean is when people are looking for a drift car they automatically think silva, skyline, sprinter and dont often consider other possibilities. And there must be some cars out there I havent thought of either...
Agreed, especially the s30 shape zeds. You thought finding a decent sprinter cost $$$ for what it is, finding a decent 2 seater (not the 2+2 station wagon ass one) on the cheap is very hard indeed.
I've always thought that the ST140 Coronas never got enough love, especially in avante guise.
EDIT: BTW it was the VLs that came with the turbo motor (RB30et), not the VNs, However the VNs did get the supercharged buick V6 though.
Also VLs aren't the same as an R31 skyline, just the nissan engine. They have a lot of cult value too, low teens for a decent turbo one. Apparently the rear sus is pretty wacky too from what i've heard.
Which track events are you going too? MX-5's and 260z's as far as the eye can see.
When it comes to making a decision on a drift car it comes down to one thing. What is tried and true? Silvia's, sprinters and skylines...
um early bmws have a huuuge cult following, as do early 911's...but stay away from 924's![]()
I want a starion but I've yet to come across a JD model and I don't want anything earlier as they were astron II powered I think. Not much in terms of support either. I heard they stopped making parts for them
There seems to be a bigger following of them in the US.
The Z's are a cult car too, and the 240Z especially fetches a takumi tax price times 5.... well I am just saying they are beyond overinflated prices. I remember looking for one with a friend as he is a total Z guy, in Sydney some people wanted like 7G for a badly rusted out one.
Most of those cars are definitely hugely popular. If someone wants to build a totally odd drift/circuit car on a low budget there are always the late 70's early 80's rwd Mazdas. Most of these things end up being used as drag cars, but I reckon a 2 door 323 hatch with bolt on flares, deep dish rims and a n/a 13b in it would be really cool, like the way the old rwd Starlets get done in Japan.
