how long do you get the noise for?
is it a tappety kinda sound?
    what engine?
if its only for a few seconds its just your oil getting around to everything

Is the engine stock? as some forgie pistons will rattle when cold. If its stock then check egine main bearings.

most engines have some piston knocking when they are cold, but it could be valve buckets as well, which you might want to get fixed.

maybe you have a blocked oil filter, using wrong oil, is the sump damaged? could be taking longer than normal for oil to reach the top and some componants are knocking dry. or somethin...

    oh yeh...
are you using a standard sump? cause if you dori around and around, back and forth, you could lose oil pressure and you may of damaged something. i.e. cams or bearings and they may make alot of noise when its cold until it becomes properly lubricated.
    etc etc.
