im 90% sure they're non-interferance.
as with i'm fairly sure ALL toyota timing belt motors (at least the ones i know (not the new ones)) are all non-interferance
im pretty sure you change them every 100 000km
dats what i do.
i hope this helps
Cheers
Yeah they are definately a non interferance design.
(I bought a AE82 with a broken belt, changed it and it went no worries)![]()
I'm pretty sure they are specified as a 60,000 belt but will
go to 100,000 without dramas![]()
ah ic..dats cool then..thx alot..btw did u change it yourself?
Yeah mate changed it my self just make sure the marks are lined up and
you won't have a problem. You will need a rattle gun or a big breaker bar
to undo the central bolt on the Harmonic balancer (big pulley on the bottom of
the motor) just make sure you don't round it off. Mine had been rounded off
by the previous owner/owners mechanic and i had to weld a bigger nut over the
top of it just to get it un done
My brothers old AE71 had a broken timing belt when we bought it, Didn't take too long to replace. Quite an easy job to do yourself if you have some mechanical ability.
Why hesitate when you can accelerate???

change every 100,000 and year i had mine break at 2am when i was drunk and changed it the next day and it was fine
get engine to TDC
undo crank bolt
pully off
plastic covers off
undo the 10mm bolt on the tensioner
hold tensioner to the side
take belt off..
at this point you can change the cam seal (recommended)
and the tensioner (if you buy a timing belt kit you get one with it, and a cam seal)
put the new belt on, making sure the marks at the top of the cam gear and cover are lined up, and the key on the top of the crank is at the top still..
do up the tensioner so the belt is tight.. not insanely tight.. just nice and firm..
covers on.
pully on..
away you go![]()
