    I hope you are going to upgrade the hubs a lot

    AE86 stock hubs leave a lot to be desired

    They are the weak point

    Nick,

    Rex is curious as to why you believe the hubs are the weak point?

    Please specify how they fail and under what loads and conditions.


    What would you suggest for upgrade purposes?

    Yeah I would be interested in hearing about upgrading the hubs. I have never heard of hub failure in the Ae86's. Maybe bearing failure due to wide wheels with low offsets, but never hub failure.

    All I do is replace the bearings every year. Only takes a hour or so. Plus use good high tempreture grease.

    ae86's wheel bearings are literally the easiest wheel bearings i have ever replaced...so theres no reason why they shouldnt be done reguarly

    You don't think that safety or load testing would be an issue before you send 10 or 12 of these guys out with SR20DET AE86s hanging a few sets of Brembos off your kits?

    I might not be as learned and with numbers and theory as yourself with all of this stuff but i'm looking past the "but its only gotta hold S13 brakes and drifter boy stretched 175 tyres" argument

    I may be speaking for older corollas here as thats more my speed... But I would be looking for something a bit more solid (personally)

    If you're wanting to make me look stupid, go for gold... I don't care. I just wouldn't go to all the trouble of a big brake upgrade on a *corolla* without making sure that I thought about actually upgrading shit rather than putting my faith in standard Corolla parts to work when I wanted to stop.

    Hey Nick,
    I was by no mean trying to put you down. I just thought that you knew of an aftermarket hub. There is very little that can go wrong with a hub other than studs and destroying the bearing seat in a bearing failure.

    As for strength, the brackets will be made from 8-9mm steel plate. That is as thick if not thicker that the factory caliper bracket. The plate will all be one piece not welded and the bends will be in such a way that they will minimise thining of the material. I even am looking at using 16mm plate and CNCing them for perfect thickness control. I have seen many places that cut and shut factory brackets and rely on the welds to hold, I don't like that so I am only using a single piece of steel.

    Once these are made I would be happy to film a series of brake tests. I by no means am a back yard engineer, I wouldn't use these brackets if I didn't think they would withstand hour and hour of brake torture.

    But make up your own mind. I have done alot of research, asked alot of experts and they all agree that the bracket in 8mm thickness will withstand anything that is thrown at it.

    UPDATE:

    Ok, after going and seeing 5 engineers I have finally found someone who can CNC. I had a good chat with the engineer, they do work for speedway cars, race bikes and cuircut racers. Firstly I found out whether steel was the way to go and found that there are many alminium products that match the strength of the mild stee (what the standard bracket is made of).

    What is happening now??

    They are making a professional quote as I right this. This will give a exact quote on a single set run, 5 set run and 10 set run. They are looking at using 6000 or 7000 series aluminium plate. Both of these product are as strong or stronger than mild steel. They use 6000 series for caliper brackets for both speedway and cuircut cars. Hopefully by tomorrow (Thursday) I will have a quote for everyone. The price is going to be higher than first expected as pressing steel isn't an option, the bends can't be made sharp enough.

    Ok, that is where I am at. Once the quote is made I still have 1 more avenue that could be used.
