I think an answer to this question calls for a sticky. Its a question that has been asked since the dawn of time and answered many times, usually not very comprehensivly and with lots of opinions and other bs along the way and it will continue to be asked until the last 86 is in a museum....
Someone with the knowledge and literary skills please stop this vicious cycle![]()
There is no complete answer to this question. It depends exactly what you are starting with and what you want to end up with.
Having said that, there are plenty of writeups and lots of good information already on the net, plus a few words with any decent mechanic will help.
So please don't expect to be spoon fed with a step by step idiots guide. Do some research and then give it a go.

i'll do a tech article soon as i'm about to do the conversion.
note: with a JDM RWD 86 4AGE so it won't be overly comprehensive as it's a simple conversion due to the fact that cooling system and inlet don't need to be modded.
hey gilly,
just wondering where can i get a 4age rwd japspec engine etc. i wanna do the same conversion but cant really find one in bris?
pm'ed you sly
these days its hard to find a RWD 4AGE.. from my experience. I called numerous of places SSS automotive, Just jap, jap connections list goes on.. they all gave me the same thing "why not buy a 20V" there must be a place there sumwhere..i've started my conversion already. Pulling motor out is the easy bit. putting it in wiring up, fuel setup is easy if u have done your research. Medcine man has some good write up on rollaclub.com.au check them out.. good luck with conversion!
i think we need a detailed step-by-step guide for a fwd->rwd 4age conversion.. any gurus here want to make one up? I'm more than happy to pay for it, and i'm sure the same applies for all other newbies..
