just got my sprinter today (yay) the steering feels really heavy, so im just wondering if anyone elses is heavy too as in having to use a fair amount of effort. with the power it goes really hard after 3000rpm, is this normal?
i think the explanation of the heavy steering has to do with the wheels, as they seem to be off a nissan or similar (they fill the guards sooo well)

Steering can feel heavy for heaps of reasons.
Start with a good wheel alignment say, toe - 0deg, caster 2.5deg and camber as close to 0 but still equal to the other side. As with toe and castor, as equal both sides as possible. Any decent wheel alignment place should be capable of that, if not, dont go back.
Then if steering still heavy, check tyre psi, should be about 36-39psi or do this before wheel alignement.
If still heavy, have you steering rack ckecked out, i dear say the bush's inside are fuked. And/or your tie rods are totalled, but would cause other problems that would be more noticeable the heavy steering.
Power a motor generates and at what rpm are detirmend by many things. Cams and ecu used, tuning, exhaust system design
For a start what type of 4age, and we could go from there.
3000rpm seems maybe a tad bit low for peak power especially on a 7000-7500rpm capable motor.

the engine is a 86kw big port with jdm ae86 ecu, i do believe that its running 4agze injectors (black injectors), i will swap them back to factory injectors as the ecu wouldnt like the bigger injectors. justin (jusdrfn86) says his has little power before 3000rpm. but mind u it might be all in my head since ive been driving around a mazda 626 2.2L for the last year so it might be the displacement differences that is throwing me off.

36-39 psi isnt dat a little too much? im running 30(cold) all round on 195/60/14..the label thingy on the car says 28psi..seems alright to me the steering feel is just like a non power steering car..but now it feels heavier than when i was running 185/65/14s
Check your tyres recomended tyre psi but i bet somewhere between 32-40psi is the normal.
My tyres now are falkens and they says 40-42psi

I run my tyres at 40psi. Thought about even going a little higher.
Non power steering AE86's will have heavier steering than your power assisted mazda. Also wide/low offset rim will make your stering heavier.
3000rpm sounds fairly normal, you wouldn't be under 3000rpm in one of these much anyway....

as for tyre pressures im around 38 in the front and 40 in the rear (depending on tyres)

If you have a welded diff they can give the feeling of heavy steering and at slow speeds 'pushing' under tight cornering. Hopefully you don't.
put new wheels on it today, makes a massive difference over the rediculously big skyline wheels previously on it. as for the power its prolly due to the length of the extractors
so my problems have been diagnosed and on the way to being fixed
