You're view is a little jaded, and I think you're talking for a minority.
lets just say you get what you pay for. you buy a 86, it's respectable, historic car
you buy a ke, it's still a 4 door banger thats rusted out. never was, never will equal an 86.
and wank factor, if you can afford good parts, why not? buying quality does more than matte black spray paint ever will.

if i had a choice between a sprinter and a 2 door hardtop/2 door sedan ae71/te71, i'd go wiht the 71 for sure!.

you cant understand hachi love if u don't have it.. and if you say that you don't have it.. so you will never get it.
buut heres a few reasons why you "would"
the aesthetic difference between x70 and ae86 is massive for one... because you don't have to fiddle around with gearboxes, crossmembers, clutch systems to put a 4age in an ae86 as compared to ke70...
because they are sexier
I care for my 16v Ae71 plenty, love the thing as long as it keeps running right. Has very minimal rust for most 84 corollas (tang or K)
And i still have as much respect for it as any ae86 drifter (track drifting with actual speed, not a 'i can cut sick around that 10kph corner')
I still love the Ae86 tho, always had the love for the car, the history, the design, however most of all the engine (jap of course haha).
So regardless as long as it has a 4age and it handles well i love it
If you want to point it out tho, the ke70 is a designed as a family sedan based on similar floor pan to the ae86, and the ae86 is a up market model corolla with better motor (4ac) and suspension to the ke70
It all depends what work is done, some people can like it for the car, some people can like it for whats in it.
If someone dangled two sets of keys in front of me, one was a ke70 with a 4age, ae86 coilover struts, and other decent setup and the other was an ae86 id choose the ke. however some people may just say, i just love the ae86 ill take that. If they were both the same in that same situation, ie a stock ae86 and a stock ae71 i would take the ae86 because i purely like the car, more
its always fun to have something a little different tho, doesnt always mean a ke, but doesnt mean you have to jump straight into the seat of a ae86
