Hey all quick question, any reason why you shouldnt put LSD oil into a locked differential housing?
Just got the idea from the whole automatic transmission fluid thing in the T50's

My basic thoughts are the oil might give the diffs a little more life, and you might get less whining noises from the housing.

Anyone tryed this, or think its a bad idea for some reason?

i say do it. LSD oil is just a plain better oil. its designed to be used in diffs that see "loads" other than that of daily driving i.e performance cars and commercial vehicles. we had a big discussion about this when i was at Tafe all those years ago our lecturer basically said if there is a better oil to use, use it. he told me all the differences between the two, buggered if i can remember them now, they were all good though

Penrite 10/10ths. use that its good, available from autobarn for like $25 for 2L, i think.....

V tec I run a locker in my race car and have just used plain diff oil the whole time, I cant see why you would need LSD oil as it is designed to work with clutches and cone type of centres. It isnt any better just meant for a different use. Save your money for other mods is my tip. I have been racing in improved production for a number of years and never had a failyer yet. Up to you though

In general, grades of gear oil from worst to best:

    GL-4
    GL-5
GL-6 (or GL-5* or LSD oil)

GL-4 is the basic gear oil and should only be used in normal manual gearboxs. Not in diffs.
GL-5 is better and can be used in gearboxes, and in diffs, or anywhere a hypoid gear is used (90 degree gear).
GL-6 or LSD oil can be used in any diff, or a diff with clutchpack LSD. It costs more so only use if you have a LSD. (Viscous LSD does not count as LSD in this situation, and Torsen probably not either).

For a locker, just use any oil and a banana skin. The axle will snap and ruin the whole thing oneday anyhow.

You can use Dextron in a manual gearbox, some gearboxs take dextron or engine oil from new. But never use Dextron or engine oil in a Hypoid gear.

duncan at top cog in caloundra said to me

if you run a locked diff only use penrite 10 10ths, he said it gets up to temperature quicker but holds a lower temperature, so it warms the diff nicely but doesnt get too hot. He also said to put more than your supposed to in, especially if your drifting because it goes down the axles and out of the center during a drift. So tilt your diff forward and fill it up.

I tend to agree with Johnny. It's a locked diff. Meaning it has fewer moving parts than normal and will bust an axle some day soon. Expensive diff oil is a waste.

Yes, quality oil may be better for diffs in general, but you need nothing special because it is a locked diff.

Put the money you save in diff oil towards a proper LSD.
