Ok ill probly get flamed for these massive noob questions but ive got no idea when it comes to diffs and ive used the search button and i still dont understand what ive got to do when changing diffs in an AE86.

First off is there any external difference between the S and T series diffs or is it just internally different??

Secondly when changing from S to T can i just change the centre of the diff, crown wheel and pinion gears etc, or do i need to change it drum to drum because the axle differences if there are any??

Hopefully i am using the right terms and it can be understood, if not then i badly need help

There are several extrernal differences as well as internal differences.

When changing diffs you will have to change the whole thing, drum to drum. So consequently you should source a whole t18 diff, ie drum to drum, housing and everything.

You used all the right terms so i wouldnt worry to much mate. No question is silly or noob if you dont know the answer... its just another question.

    Hope that helps bro.

The T and S series diffs look much the same (as does any Toyota live axle setup). The T series uses a slightly bigger crown wheel and pinion and diff gears. To tell the difference the T series has 10 studs and nuts holding the diff center to the axle housing. The S series has 8.

If you are going to weld it locked, the S series diff will do for some time. Going to the T series diff means you can buy a LSD for it.

Yeh in the future i will be buying an LSD for it thats why i want to go T series, not just lock an s series.

Are they the same length i.e. does one stick out further than the other??

If the whole axle setup is from a AE86 or TE72, they should all be the same width.

(Although some say the AE86 2 door may have been wider for some years.)

So how do i know whether its kouki or zenki and does this make any difference with regards to the type of lsd i have to get, or does this only apply if i get a t series from a JDM 86?

If you're getting a t18 diff it'll be a 'zenki' which is an early model small axle diff and you just have to get a zenki LSD for it.

If you are getting a jap ae86 diff then you may get a 'zenki' or a 'kouki' and the kouki is identified by larger axles (pull the axle out a bit and look at the big arse bearing on it).

Don't forget to get the rear half of a t-18 tail shaft if you get a t series diff. Also a good thing to do if you are getting it from a Upull or pick a part or whatever is to swap the t18 centre with a celica 4.1 ratio t series (eg auto ra40), that way you don't have to pay for a new gearset when you find out that the 3.7 is rubbish
