no it will never touch the valves, IE: non inteference engine
Sunday night driving home my car just stalled on the spot and rolled for a while.
Diagnosed the problem as the timing belt, half of the belt (width ways) had been eaten away and there was a 4" section of the belt down near the crank pulley that had all the teeth missing.
Now what I wanna know do the 4age's (bigport JDM) have the clearances so valves don't hit the pistons even at full lift of the piston?
Answer asap would be good.
Cheers.

The man is correct.
so this means they wont valve bounce????
check to see if the spring on the timing belt tensioner is still in place. It'll chew the shit out of a belt if it falls onto the crank pulley
Think that's what mighta happened, the crank pulley also has some nice little marks in it and the belt was chewed chronic, so yeah. Oh well up and running tomorrow hopefully. Thanks for the help.
valve bounce is something that happens to engines when their valves hit against the vlave seat and actually bounce off, its unrelated to how the cam is driven. Its common on old engines with soft valve springs with 2 valve heads and high(ish) revs

Although if there are aftermarket cams with more lift or thinner HG or shaved head or anything else that will cause the valves to occupy the same space as the piston then it may no longer be a non-interference head...
Acutally does anyone know the clearance between valve and piston at full open and tdc? it would be interesting to know just how much extra lift or whatever you would need to make it interfere
to my knowledge ALL toyota engines with timing BELTS not chains are non-interferance.
dont worry about putting a spring back on the tensioner pulley...it becomes redundant once the belt has pulled up
