Thread: Price of 4agze and fitment

    I am thinking about buying an AE86, and just asking how much it would be to get an 4agze fitted, I am in Perth wa, i am aware that there is alot of custom work, just want to know how much it has cost when fitted at a garge, if to pricey i am going the DIY approach

    honestly there isn't all that much work involved..

    i wrote up a step by step guide years ago when i first did mine..

    i did my entire conversion with a set of average tools.. like scredrivers.. socket set and spanners.. and an angle grinder.. the grinder is a must..

    took about 2 days.. and i started with a front cut and my ae86 both with thier engines in them..

    so really it's not that hard at all...

    Matty is super-human. It takes most average people (like me) several weeks (or months) to get this conversion going.

    Not really that hard, but just a bit of a dickaround when you remember for the 20th time in a day that you need to head out again to get more hose clamps/rad hose/spade terminals/relays/beer.

    Drive in - drive out conversion will cost huge amounts. Maybe 5-6k. Getting on the phone is your best bet on finding prices though.

    yeah its not the amount of work thats genearlly the hard part, its, like hen was saying, all the stupid little things that you forget and have to go and buy

    Cost about $2000-3000 for complete conversion( only cost me $2000 coz i did most of it myself or got mates rate). It took me one day to pull the engine out and put the GZE in and a couple of weeks for the fabrication and stuff.

    I did about 2 weeks research first searching for everything i could find on GZE conversion (mine was into an AE71 but exactly the same thing). Once i figured out everypart i needed from mates and looking at pictures i went out and bought all the stuff needed.

    You always forget a couple of things which is a pain in the ass when you have to call mates or ride your bike to get them so be prepared

    PARTS YOU'LL NEED:
    Front mount intercooler
    Larger radiator but standard one is good enough
    New clutch
    New accelerator cable(AE82 one fits straight in)
    Pod filter
    Lots of hose clamps, water hose(about 2m) and maybe joiners
    New belts, plugs and leads while your at it
    Spigot bearing for RWD 4AGE (get one at Repco morley)
    4AGE RWD flywheel
    Possibly engine mounts if the ZE doesn't have any

    DID I MISS ANY????????????????????????

    PARTS THAT YOU NEED FABRICATED OR DONE BY SPECIALIST
    Exhaust
    IC piping
    FMIC brackets
    SC inlet pipe switched around for FMIC
    New loom and ECU wired in
    Aircon de-gased

    Getting all the parts and info is the first step (i can give most of it to you as i'm in Perth if you want).

    Next you have to pull the old engine out obviously and all irelevant parts but i suggest this order (feel free to correct me if i'm wrong)
    -Radiator, aircon stuff, battery
    -Disconnect any electrics in engine bay remembering where they came from
    -Hacksaw off exhaust as it's the quickest way to get it off plus you don't need it!
    -Undo Gearbox mounts( (support it) + undo engine mounts
    -Pull out engine and then gearbox (obviously remove tailshaft, and gearstick aswell. Also remove speedo cable and reverse sensor on box)

    You'll then have to cut a hole in the fire wall for the loom. Easiest way is to draw a circle the size of the inside edge of the gromment, drill several tiny holes around it and cut them with a hacksaw blade. Clean it up with a file or die grinder if you have one.

    You're going to need to relocate your thermostat but thats simple. Also you need to cut your water pump outlet pipe shorter as it will hit the fire wall.( best to cut the end of and cut a section out and reweld so you have a lip on the end of the pipe.) Apart from that you're to need to get ypur hands on a 4AGE water pputlet for th back of the cylinder head as the standard one hits firewall also.

    You'll need to put your new clutch on at this point, which can be a bit of a pain in the ass lining up the clutch in the centre of the pressure plate so it will slide on the gearbox spline. I've managed to jag mine everytime using my eye but you can buy tools for this from Supercheap or somewhere similair. Make sure you get the correct torque settings (i have them here somewhere) for flywheel and pressure plate.

    Mount your gear box onto your engine and tighten up real good. Getting the whole lot in now is the hard part as you need atleast two people. One has to push the egine into the bay while one pushes on the gearbox to get the angle you need to get the geabox under the tunnel. It's a slow proccess of pushing in, pushing down and lowering engine. It's pretty straight forward though getting it in. Next you just have to line up engine mounts (not as easy as you think)

    Once you got it all lined up put do up the gearbox mount so the engine sits in there nicely then do up the engine mounts, put tailshaft, gearstick etc back on.

    Hooking up the water hoses is hard to explain but i have photos to help.
    The rest is pretty straight forward but i can help you out if you want.

    i wish my engine conversion only took 2 weeks, mines taken me about month and a half and still haven't finished but this is the first conversion ive done ever. and im not the world greatest machanic either

    and i found im always on this forum asking for info as well, if any haven't noticed and its a good source as well.
