so if i were to plug in my spare aus spec bigport ecu could i run shit aussie fuel without damaging anything etc? (on jap bigport)

Yes. I think the Jap motor is the same anyway, only small differences if any. If for some reason the compression was high, and the fuel realy bad, the motor will ping. In that case you can retard the ignition slighly (move the distributor).
