About 7kAUD gets you a low km 20v4AGE powered, clean lookin' 86 hatch (car in question - . The prices listed are certainly cheaper in general than Australia.

But I rarely hear of people importing cars from Japan. Do the additional costs (aside from purchase price) cancel out the savings altogether?

I import direct from japan and i can tell you that befor you even buy a car allow around a grand for fees an japan
    this includes
1 broker buying car for you
    2 broker paying auction fees
3 degassing aircon "this much be done"
    4 applying for export paperwork
    5 trucking car to yokohama
6 fees for car in storage for car at docks in japan

now for the freight charges and other charges

    frieght 1046.45
port charges at sydney "robbing bastards" 175.31
    aqis fees ?? 193.00
duty and or sales tax 510.44
    edi fee 9.35
    agency supervision 253.00

    total cost 2187.55 gst inc

now a special maritime pass is need to get into glebe island so not every tilt tray can get in
trucking to say 70 mile radius of glebe $200
profesional clean for quarintine inspection $150+
quarintine inspection $75 an hout usually 2 to 3 hours

in fact that is what i payed for the car i have at the moment and these prices are from 2 weeks ago so they are recent

total roughly you even buy a car it is 3500 to 3700 dollars to land her in oz and then you have to buy/fit parts for comlyence

    tyre placard
    emissions placard
    ulp placard
    ulp filler neck
    anti intrusion beams
    child restrains fitted
    check lamp colours correct
    clean/check brake hoses
    check brakes
    check tyres for wear indicators
    install retractable rear seatbelts
    weight bridge ticket
oil and filters change engineers cert
    blue slip, greenslip and rego
i recon you will have no change from 2 grand there at least
total cost 5500/5700 so far and i have not included a bulshit cost factor that you always incure

also take into consideration that you are sending money BLIND to japan for a car in pictures not in the flesh
"life is like a box of chocolates you dont know what your gonna get"
my bloke personally inspects the cars in japan for me and lets me know whats what
most ae86s are now grade r and that means at some stage they have been painted/repaired at some time
very very few are standard and prices are skyrocketing as most sold threw auction are exported to ireland
you only have to look at the autotrader ireland website to see cars make up to 12k in pounds / euro equlavent

hope this has been a help and i hope you appreciate the time it took me to type this lol and you got this first hand from some who does this day in day out now for a living

Thanks a lot Sexy 16, that really puts it into perspective, and I've since dismissed the idea to import.

Even if you buy direct from a used dealer, instead of an auction, seems its still hard to come out on top.

I was also unaware of the amount of modifications neccessary to a Japanese vehicle, in order to run it on Aus roads, and the extent to which duty fees and such fucks you over.

Might just be worthwhile bringing in a Euro model and flipping it once its landed, to make a small profit. (ie - E class merc going for around 7kAUD , would sell in Perth for 17/18k.) Not that I'd bother lol.

appreciated that write up muchly, sexy 16.

looked into the importing ages ago and yeah didnt realise half of that shit. one thing i came across in addition to all your list was that.......some sites/brokers also made you get a new set of tyres for it. which was puzzling.

and youre right, theres no exact way of getting a feel for the condition of the car. so much trust involved.

so kids, from now on when you see jdm stocker truenos selling in aus for 10k.... you can stop whining.

7.5k aud from auction will equate to roughly round 14k once landed in oz. costs include freight, stamp duty, quarintine yada yada yada the list goes on. unless your very committed on buying one for id say go for it but a little advice if your planning on importing one yourself be prepared to pay for hidden costs of importing vehicles. it'd be best to go to guys like sexy 16 who regularly bring these beasty cars to our shores

If I wanted a daily driver GT-Apex spec car, I would get a import. But because I am doing the rollcage-racecar style with little interia, importiing would be a waste of money. I just get parts.

If you are in Hobart, go to JDS. A family member is getting a Hiace Super Custom, will let you know how it goes.
