170psi is just my guess. Anything below 150psi would be poor.
CAN ANYONE TELL ME IN PSI, WHAT I WOULD GET IF I COMPRESSION TEST A STANDARD BLACKTOP 20V ENGINE. PLEASE
170psi is just my guess. Anything below 150psi would be poor.
for a blacktop thats meant to be in decent condition i would think more along the lines of 190-180psi with 5-8psi lee-way between each cylinder, anything less then its not a real healthy motor.
After first test put 20-30mls of engine oil down each cylinder then retest, if new test numbers or more then 5% higher then the first test then rings are pretty worn.
Post up your results for all to see.

yeah my 4k has 150 all round, so id like to think that a blacktop 20V would have a little more compression than that, so yeah 180-190 sounds pretty reasonable

190psi across all 4, ive had 2 blacktops in my possesion (still have one that i might drop into the car soon if all goes well) and both made 190psi on all pistons..
i think piston ring are gonnne. im only getting 175 each cylinder. thanks for your help u guys
it could be valve stem seals ? did you try putting oil down the plug holes then doing compression test, thats the best way to check if rings are letting pressure by is it not ?
i tried that, putting oil in the plug hole and compression test it and it gave me a very high reading like around 230. what does that mean? does that mean still i have to recon my bottom end or the head needs a recon?
Most normal cars driving on the road compression test at 150psi. A 4A-GE with 175psi on all 4 is going to apear to be healthy and will drive very well, and probably have at least 90% of its factory power. But if its ment to have more, then you will need new rings to get 100% of the factory power.
From the AE111 4A-GE manual (blacktop 20 valve):
Compression: 193psi or more
Minimum compression: 156psi
Difference: 14psi or less
So your engine is within spec and ok. I'm sure it goes fine. To rebuild or not is your choice.
It means the oil is filling in any caps between the rings and block. Dont stress on it thou, 99.9% of cars with more then 40,000kms will do the same thing (higher compression with oil in cylinders).
Although i would say 175psi is a little low for a blacktop, but if you had the funds, then rebuild, if your sorta low on cash, you could wait a while.
And if the valves stem where worn i think there would be alot of smoke on start up. But unless it fills the garage i wouldnt worry about it.
