Spring could be binding up?
Hey Everyone,
Suspension question/dilemma below, any help would be greatly appreciated.
running a trueno with the following suspension:
Front - Tokico 102s + TRD Springs 6kg (part # 48131-AE801-60)
Cusco 35mm RCA
Rear - Tokico 102s + TRD Springs 4kg (part # 48231-AE801-43)
Recently i compressed the springs as i wasnt at all happy with the 4wd ride height of my car. I think thats where i went wrongSad. Compressed the front 1 inch and the rear 3/4 inch.
Since then the car has been bumping all over the place, its like ive traded in whatever repsone i had for back breaking harshness. Not sure if theres a major problem here or im just a girl who needs to get use to it, just doesnt feel right. Compressed spring might not be actually functioning as its just holding the strut in place. maybe too compressed?
any advice or opinions at all would be GREATLY appreciated by me and my spine.
Cheers!
FFS Just lost the response I was typing...
Anyway the gist was, check that you are not hitting the bump stops. If you are chop a section out of them...
Another thing that could have happened is that your dampers are operating too far to one end (ie the piston is to close to the end of its stroke). This gives rise to 'end effects' which change the way the shock operates and can make the car bounce. If you space the shock correctly so that the piston is in the centre of the stroke of the shock then it will work as the manufacturer intended. This might not be easy to do, you would need to space the shock body on the front down in the strut and change the mounting pt at the rear. The 102s is shorter than the standard insert isn't it?
The alternative is to live with it like so many people do who have slapped together rough as guts suspension set ups.
Check the bump travel though
I have the identical rear setup to you with TRD 4.3kg springs and Tokico 102s. My car's not on the road yet but with the research ive done, the TRD springs are far too high for the shocks. The springs have a free height of 230mm and the shocks need around a 205-215mm spring which would be spot on your newly compressed height.
Id go with what RobertoX is saying with the bump stops and check those 1st as the new height should be right in the mid range of the shock travel. Have you tried playing with the shock settings? Try harder/softer and see how it affects things.
Eddie.
4agte finally finished. 252rwkw with more to come
Thanks heaps guys
Yeah tried adjusting the rear, harder and its too stiff, softer and its too bouncy, its like i cant find the perfect setup.
Will take a look at the bump stops, probably been asked 1.6 million times, but would people recommend cutting a little of the bump stops in my situation (short stroke shock and compressed springs).
Cheers
I cut some bump stop off mine.
definately cut your bumpstops down, at least one "section" off the front and rear. use a sharp knife or wood saw.
I run the same TRD springs on the rear of my car (they are 4.3 kg.mm by the way, thats what the 43 at the end of the part number means) and i reckon they are the perfect ride height, you must like your cars in the weeds!
Yeah I'm not too sure if adjusting the shock setting will help this sort of problem. Generally on a single way adjustable shock the adjustment is done primarily on the low speed rebound rate. It will affect the high speed a bit but who knows (never seen the 102s on a dyno before)
For the bumpiness you will generally want to play with high speed rates
thanks heaps everyone,
first step is to look at the bump stops and go from there![]()
