I havent done it, but im also interested, what type of welder are you going to use?
soooo yair has anyone done this? im purely interested in how your welds have turned out strong enough?
will be attempting this tomorow as im bored. Please not this is not a "mod" for the street, just to satify my curiosisty.

wouldnt it be alot easier to use PS arms
ive seen ae86 arms cut and shut, where basically the tie rod end would have been an inch from the strut...didnt ever hear of how they went on the car though....
ps, turn the welder to flat out![]()
I have done this a few times. Have not had one break yet. But I would never recomend this to anyone.
I ground the peices to create a good V on either side. I used a 150 Amp DC TIG welder, turned all the way up to 150 Amps. High quality TIG filler wire. Argon gas with flow turned up a bit also. Spent time with the TIG torch heating up both bits of metal. Did a few layers of weld so as to not get too many air pockets. Got it hot so eveything is melting together good. I welded a 3rd arm to test in a press for strength, and later cut in half to inspect for air pockets.
I did this several times to experiment with ackemann angles, quick steering, bump steer etc. It was on my KE30/TE37 before I got into AE86 stuff.
Yes I could have just used AE86 PS knuckles. And yes I got more steering lock than most KE30s back when drifting was called "going hard" among old racers.
id be more worried about getting both sides EXACTLY the same length? cause if you make one slightly shorter (we all know how much your wheel alignment has to be out to notice it) could end up in some very interesting steering characteristics.
saying that, im sure theres a way to make them the same

ps, this sounds uber dangerous. power steering arms the way to go

If you just want more lock than we sell lock spacers (screw on type) for $65...
...which is alot cheaper than all the damage you will do when your welds break (which IS a question of when and not if), especially if you hit something / someone. Also gives a comparable amount of lock.
Cutting and shutting most sus parts FTB.

You can have any brew you want... as long as it's a Datsun / Corolla / What is that?
As well as being the same length, they should be the same offset (axkermann), and same angle (bump steer).
In the front end, everything effects everything. There is no easy way to understand it.
You can also make your own new steering arms from scratch. Start with a thick plate of steel... Some people have sold them on the auctions in japan.
