Hey guyz, I'm doing a 4age conversion soon and was thinking of going the carbie route just casue it should be cheaper to buy a motor without the injectors, map sensor, inlet manifold etc. i know carbies are expensive to buy but also know that i will get about a 15 hp gain just from putting them on. besides the efi management systems are real expensive from what i can tell. Plus i dont mind having to tune the carbies every week or so, love working on my car and keeping it in good mechanical condition

    Thats my thoughts anyway,

    Cheers.

heres my thinking--> (for a bigport, and prices are just estimates from what ive seen)

stock 4age - $500 (should be able to get one with most of the stuff you need for that, injectors alternator, starter etc) from the wreckers or forums

loom/ecu maybe $200-300 maybe? (just stock ecu)

    jdm/cut and shut inlet manifold - $200

    now for carbies,

    engine - 500$
    carbies - 500$

and then whatever you need to do to the ignition system (do those deloratos (spell) carbies, have a spot for vac advance, and does it work on normal dizzy?) may have to get dizzy re mapped or something, im not up on this kind of thing sorry

you will still need decent-ish fuel system for both (ie decent efi pump, and most likely a surge tank)

    so i dunno, i guess its a much of a much-ness really.

if you know what your doin with carbies there can be great gains had from then, i personally would prefer to go efi, just cause its easy to just stick it all in.

carbies have the awesome induction roar, so thats a pretty big incentive to go carbies

Basicaaly was thinking that it would be way easier to set up, from what i can tell as long as I have a manifold for the carbies its just a matter of bolting them on, fuel supply and throttle linkage. Sure I will have to spend alot of time tuning but I don't mind that. I got the dizzy situation sorted out. I was hoping to be able to get the engiine super cheap cause i would just be buying basically the head, block, exhaust manifold and thats it, don't need the injectors, intake manifold, map senors and ecu.

Anywayz depends if I can get the aprts seperatly or not. i'm only a 2nd year mech and not to confident with the ecu wiring even though it would be easyish from what i've heard. Plus there the issue of no engine light on the dash, and what happens if any of the electrics stuff up,want to keep it as simple as possible for now.

Carbies are good. That way no cpu. So when you want to chuck in big cams you don't have to get a after-market cpu. Which costs quite allot fitted and tuned. Carbies for the do it your self. And being a mechanic you should have no trouble tuning them once you you get the hang of it. tuned well you will nearly have as much power as quad throttles. Also make sure you get 45-mm throat not 40-mm.
