You wanna re-write that jibberish so we can understand what your on about.

I can only think your saying your mate got told he has close ratio 4th and 5th gears and he was asked where the gears came from.

And your mate says he doesnt know where they came from.

    So what is your question.
    Insert witty comment here....

4th and 5th are already closer than the average tasmanian family

any closer and it gets really creepy!

There is no way of changing the "ratio" of 4th gear without some serious box modifications. 4th just rigidly connects the input and output shafts.

I feel you and/or your friend have been lead astray.

Route 6 will be the brand name, and what this means is that the gear ratio for 4th and 5th gear will be lower. That means that for example rather than being geared to do say 250kph in 5th gear at maximum rpm (which you'd never get to use) it is geared lower, that way you will be able to use the gears more and keep the car in the power band more at high speeds rather than being geared really high. The downside is that the revs might be slightly higher at highway cruising speeds in 5th gear, so it might use a little bit more petrol.

DK86: people are trying to tell you that you can not actualy change the ratio of 4th gear in a normal gearbox. This is because 4th gear ratio is 1:1, as the input and output shafts are locked together.

But there is a way. If you get a very low gear ratio for 5th gear, even lower than 1:1, then the 5th gear effectively becomes the 4th gear. 1:1 becomes 5th gear. To work this the gearshift pattern is out. You have to put the stick up in 5th gear position to get 4th gear etc.

But no one has heard of Route 6. Maybe you can tell us the gear ratios and whether they are straight cut or helicoil gears.
