Default Dodgy AE86 Headlight Switch unit

    Heyas,

So for the second time, the headlight switch/dash dimmer rheostat unit in my AE86 is failing on me. Last time I just replaced it with a 2nd hand unit, which worked a treat for a year until now. It's displaying the same issues, which is basically turning my headlights off randomly (whilst driving) and sometimes refusing to turn on again until I bash my dash fonzie style.

I have temporarily fixed this issue with cable ties (should've taken a photo, its sweet).

Anyways, I remember ages ago skimming over an article in the old forums that I believe fixed this issue by soldering the busted contacts within the unit itself. Anyone happen to have the thread handy?... or any other ideas?

Take it out. You will see 2 wires that go to the dim adjusting part, cut them and join them. It will never go out again, but will always be on at its brightest.

This is a common problem. There's a bunch of writeups out there on how to fix it properly. Mine has been working for 5 years now after fixing.

the problem is dry joints on the switch pcb. you need to reflow these solder joints, or get someone to do that for you. then you'll get many more years of service.
