Well the engine is back together but it wont start. If the accelerator cable is all the way in it will run at the same RPM as the starter motor for a few seconds before dying. It has compression and seems to spark. Every now and then it makes a huge whooosh noise out the exhaust. Anyone have any ideas or shots of their 4kc installed for comparison?

can you be a little more specific about this huge "woosh" out the exhast

i assume you didnt change your cam timing, so that should all be good

if the "wooosh" is what im imagining, you your ignition timing might be out?

so the spark plug is firing at some random time, when the exhaust valve is open, and sending the bang out the exhaust straight away.

so yer i would be checking your ignition timing (distibuter position), rememeber that the cam shaft spins half as fast as the crank, so you might have all the notches lined up for the timing, but can be 180 degrees out.

    just some thoughts

edit: this is all assuming you took the dizzy out when you changed the gasket. if it was running in its current position then most of what i said is irrelevant.

ah... cam is still in the block lol, not the head... lol

other way around, crank spins twice as fast as the cam

    Yeah timing hasn't been changed.

Took manifolds and carby off. Took rocker cover off. Removed head. Shimmed head. Replaced gaskets and reassembeled. The only timing related part that may have changed is the rocker push rods. Had to unto the adjusting lugs to get the rods under the arms, however they would only have changed very minimally.

The big whoosh comes out of the exhaust but only happened like 10 times in my 30 mins of trying to get it going.

the "woosh" sound maybe when its firing just one cylinder.

without trying to start it, take the air hat off, open and close the throttle, if you can see the fuel spray around, its got fuel. just worth checking seeing as its been off an all.

yeh check that theres some fuel coming into the carby, then check spark and then try puttin some fuel in the carby and then see how it goes, then if all else fails get a mobile mechanic

    good luck bro

Did you put the plug leads back on in the correct order? Cause it sounds as though the thing is firing at the wrong time.

The leads should be connected in the order 1 3 4 2

Pressing the little valve on the top of the carby squirts a mist of fuel.

I certainly felt at least one of the sparks fire.

Got most of the gunk not sure about the poo tho....

Just checked the timing and all seems well. The rotor arm is where it should be and the valves all move at the right time.
