I'm reading alot of conflicting stuff regarding straight cut gears. Are they any stronger?? because I'm tossing up between a W box and a set of TRD straight cuts, but its starting to look there is no strength benefit regarding SC. :wtf:

note engine is a tweaked 4agze

Helical cut gears are stronger( in design ) and quiet.

the reason for useing straight cut is that the gears have no screw out effect. alot of power is wasted on helical cut gears cos they try to screw away from each other linearly.

heilcal is stonger by design, but due to different metals used to make most straight cut gears sets, they're usually stronger

They don't call them dog-boxes for nothing

As much as I'd love to say coated straight-cut gears would be the cure-all solution for what you are working with, it has been proven extensively that the cheaper, and possibly more efficient option is to grab a W-series box with bell housing adaptor, as they are a much stronger box, capable of holding the kind of power you are (probably) producing.

As an idea, a friend got a price for a conversion to make the first 3 gears of a Subaru gearbox straight cut (with a different metal coating, I think Platinum was mentioned? not sure), and was priced for about the $5000 mark. I hate to be the guy that 'jumps on the bandwagon', but you can spend a lot of money on getting it straight cut, or go the cheaper option that will work just as well

exactly. dog engagement instead of synchro.

straight cut or helical is the cut of the teeth.

    You get straight cuts if

there are no engineering places with the tooling to make helical gearsets for custom ratios or

you are looking for every performance advantage in your big $$$ racer or

you are limited to your current box and are having issues with casing strength or

    as a wank.
