AE71 and AE86 are the only boxes that bolt straight in and work
there aren't many AE71's or AE86's around these days, on the road or at the wreckers
They are rarely imported as AE86 halfcuts are no where near as common as S13 SR itemsyou have to normally find a JDM 86 halfcut and organise to bring it in instead of going to the local import wreckers and having the luxury of choice of 4 or 5 SR cuts
add to that GZE and GTE owners that use and destroy the T50 rather than upgrade to a W box
add to that they are costly to rebuild so damaged boxes get thrown away not reco'd
it is what it is, as far as i can recall they have been around the $300 mark. one of the only 86 parts that hasn't jmped up in price over the years e.g ADM 86 struts
also T18 out put shaft has 20 spline instead of 22, you can use the front half of a T18 tailshaft to make it work, quite frankly finding a T18 at the wreckers is just as hard as an AE71 or AE86
I personally think that t18's are heaps easier to find than 86's... Maybe its just a Tasmania thing haha.
I have 3 sitting in my backyard, once i pull the gearboxes out ill sell them on here cheap for you guys. I have them advertised on rollaclub for $100 each so yeahI'd say that t18 boxes are a viable, cheap replacement option. Front half of t18 tailshafts are cheap, everybody only wants the back bits!
Cheap replacement parts are tops
Must be a Tassie thing. I'd kill for a cheap T-18, but the only one I've seen for sale recently, the dude was asking about 3k (granted it was in very good condition.)

Same splines as W boxes
You can have any brew you want... as long as it's a Datsun / Corolla / What is that?

Hence why when you go 4A + W5x you need to have a little center splined thingy from a supra put in the clutch instead of the normal one.

No offence but thats pretty much all wrong.

None taken, some of it is assumption based on:
The fact that i have installed a T-18 spec T50 on a 3TGTE, which came standard with a W box, and an AE71 box would not bolt up (not only due to different bellhousing, but different input splines.
However i'll concede that the 4a-w box thing is almost entirely assumed / only read about, so i'm not sure whether there's truth in it.
For those playing at home, there are about 3 different versions of the T50.

I think your "AE71" box may have been actually a K box. AE70 import perhaps?? Because (bell housings and tailshaft aside) an AE71 box will always go where a T18 box was.
The main difference in T50s is output length and spline. 18 (rare) 20 and 22 (AE71/86) are the sizes.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Anthony @ Dec 22 2007, 05:21 PM) </div>100% sure it was a T box. It was a T-40 actually, fresh out of Lawsons AE71 panel van, so i decided to try and fit it up to see if there was any truth in it.
Odd...
