    I'm after some help.
Do coilovers on a AE86 pass the pits/roadworthy? I'm bringing my Trueno home with me next month from Japan and am going to chop the front struts and turn them into coilovers, but not if it is going to mean headaches when I take it to be complianced. Has anyone had any experience with suspension modifications and roadworthy, particularly in South Australia?
    Thanks!

i belive that when importing a vechile, everything will need to be brought back to stock standard form. but depends how you bring it in the country.. either as a grey/private import or a personal import .. i belive rules will differ alittle but more all less the same.. mayb stock up on some standard part and leave them in the boot .. I'm sure stock ae86 parts in japan are cheap as chips ...

    Have a look .

This Sth Aust guy has given a detailed response to an engineering query primarily relating to engines as it applies in Sth Aust but I suspect you will be able to go along way to answering your question here, plus by following some specified links.

ive spoken to the guys at regency about this, and its the height adjustablity thats illegal but they wont accept welded struts, they are apparently looking at developing a policy to determine how they can be legal but the issue with welding is that its a gas filled strut that they say should not be heated.

Thanks for all the help guys, although I'm still at two minds as to what to do.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (fuzzy @ Mar 13 2008, 07:18 PM) </div>Hmmm, welded struts are no good hey, even though before welding them you take out the shock so the only gas filling the strut is air?

I've also got an 111 to put in it, I wonder what they will think of that at Regency.......

Have a look at a stock strut body, how the hell do they reckon the stock spring platforms are attached? PVA fucking glue? Araldite? Tek screws?

Comply the car with the standard spring seat on the strut, you can weld them into coilovers later.

If you get defected, borrow someones stock struts to pass the inspection..

in nsw, coilovers are legal as long as they cannot be adjusted to make the car lower than legal ride height (100mm here). I know coz i got them in mine and its all certified

in my experiance of actually being envolved with the import of ae86s under the current scheme you will not have a problem. it really is up to the engineers discression. to the letter of the law it may be illegal but its something that comes down to the engineer really.

if youre serious about bringing the car back you should have someone over here youre thinking of using? if you have thats who you need to get in contact with, or have someone here contact them for you.
