mark bought a brand new one for his 4agze when he put a street exhaust on it. The first time he drove it, there was a mist of metal coming out of the exhaust tips and the rear muffler was full of metal. It has stopped now (probably nothing left).

No idea whether it lowered the performance or not.

Yup, get an old cat, hollow him out, and weld it all together with a straight pipe running through the middle, no one will be the wiser, you have yourself hi-flow!

yo cheers for the info mang5!
has anyone experience metal shaving problems from a magnaflow cat.. hopefully it was just a one-off thing
and fuck that place is cheap.. is the store in sydney NSW can't find it on the site

don't want a smelly smell and bad fuel comsuption with a hollow cat!
and on MY opinion a bit of backpressure on n/a is aiights

and I'm gonna get 2.25' piping on my ST 20v but have a 3' "butterfly switch"
well my options are to get a 2.25' cat then flange it on the 3' butterfly switch back to 2.25' piping
OR flange the piping to a 3' cat straight to the butterfly switch and flange back to piping
what I'm thinking is all the restriction on my exhaust are bigger in size but can there be problems such as bad air flow or ???

wouldn't you loose back pressure being that your exhuast is to big? i mean 2.25inch is what i think would be more suitable for aturbo 4agze... keep in mind a st 20v is still only a 1.6 na motor ... 3inch is what you would use on a 2l motor like a sr20 ....

I'm no expert but i belive you want a bit of back pressure or a blance of back pressure or else the exhaust air will just be "floating " inside the exhuast pipe .. .

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (D86TOY_20V!nce @ Mar 19 2008, 12:28 AM) </div>If i read this correctly you're saying:

    -Extractors into 2.25" piping
-2.25" piping to continue into cat
    -Cat
-2.25" piping exiting cat, expanding to 3"
    -3" butterfly switch
-3" piping exiting butterfly switch reducing back to 2.25" for rest of system

If so, that will be fine. Keep the length of piping that is 3" in diameter to a minimum as piping this size will drain power greatly if used in exessive lengths. The increase in cross sectional area may work in your favour as the internals of the switch will reduce the area effectively, so the increase in size shouldnt effect too much.

It is a common practice to increase the size of the cat, so say for a 2.25" exhaust system use a 2.50" cat, this llows the gases to filter easily as there is greater area for that section for them to pass through, thus reducing the bottle-neck affect the cat converter causes.

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (redsprinter @ Mar 19 2008, 08:26 AM) </div>Read what he said a bit more clearly. :2thumbs:

    General rule of thumb:

    -NA 1600-2000cc 2.25" MAX
-4agze etc. 2.50" Seems to be the go.
-4agte etc. 2.50" will suffice, 3.00" will allow more power however... but wouldn't go any bigger
    -2000cc+ Turbo 3.00" or 3.50"

Basically, with an NA engine you want an amount of back pressure. There is a very fine optimum range and this varies on alot of factors, each case must be considered seperately to ensure a suitable system. Turbo is simple, Bigger is better, the least back pressure the better, obviously back pressure causes resistance to spool up, the easier the turbine wheel can spin the better the effect of the turbo.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (ukato @ Mar 19 2008, 08:47 AM) </div>Pretty common mod made, however if tested for exhaust emissions they will find out and a fine for a hollowed cat is greater than that of not running one at all....
