sounds like a dodgy cable

Ok, the speedo on my car hasnt worked since i got it. The previous owner said it was working before, but stopped just before i got it.
A few days ago i decided ill try to find out whats wrong with it.
I checked the back of the speedo, and made sure the cable connects properly into the gear.
The cable isnt broken as i pulled it out and made sure it could move freely and all that.
I pulled the cable off the gearbox and it seems that the inside cable isnt long enough to reach into the speed sensor. I managed to pull out the speed sensor part so that the cable can lock into it, which fixed it. But the speedo stopped working again after 20km.
Is there a way to stop the speed sensor thing having so much play in it so the cable can reach it properly?
Btw, i don't know how to take the speedo gear thing off the gearbox to have a look at the inside of it.

is the gearbox part of it meant to move in and out so much?
I might just replace all of it if i can't figure it out.
when the cable gets old it can jam and "wind-up" inside the outer, make sure your dash cluster spins/reads properly then just get a new cable.
even though the cable still spins, it's now damaged beyond repair
It was working perfect when i made sure it sat in the gearbox part, as in speed was spot on and all that.
Then when it stopped working i looked and the speedo sender looked like it had moved further in so the cable wouldn't connect.
Can the twisting shorten the inside cable?
mate check the speedo gear if it is concave the gear needs replacing, put a batery drill on the gear box end of the cable and test if the cable dosent move try it in reverse if it does try it for a while if good it is something to do with the gearbox end! :2thumbs:
