yo andrew, does the whole rack move up and down? if so it would probably just be stuffed bushes. If the whole rack is stuffed which would be unusual then one out of an ae71 will fit. Which I potentially can organise for you from the wrecker.
so i've decided to get off my ass and sus out this annoying knockin noise coming from the front in my steering/suspension which has become more noticeable since i've changed to coilovers
i think i've narrowed it down to what i think they call the rack (which is where the rack ends bolt on to)? i noticed there was a bit of play when i moved it vertically up & down.. which kinda makes sense as i only notice the knocking noise over bumps on the road etcccc
so what are my options to get this thing fixed? can i get the thing reco'd.. or are these thing interchangable with any other toyotas at the wreckers.. or are there parts available over the counter
btw I'm in vic
appreciate some input
Thanks
Andrew

which end of the rack end are you talking about?
if it is the outer end then easy fixed, get new tierods
if it is the inner end then check the bushes, if they are fine then swap or get your internals rebuilt
yea its already got new tierods on it.. ill dig a lil deeper and have a look at the bushes
thanks for ur input :2thumbs:
looks like this is where all the play/knocking is coming from...
suggestions?

Vertical play - fucked inner rack bush - this is the one that concerns you.
Replace the inner rack bush. You can't see it, you have to strip the rack out of it's housing to replace it. Problem solvered.
You can have any brew you want... as long as it's a Datsun / Corolla / What is that?
Are you sure it's not the universal joint from the main shaft? My yokes were worn and it caused it to make a loud knocking sound when ever going over bumps. To test it, pull the shaft, not the steering wheel, up and down and see if it makes a noise.
I simply got a 2nd hand rack with universal joint attached from an old corolla at the wreckers... hmm can't remember what type of rolla it was, but the easiest way is to take your rack in with you and match one up.
